He Planted 6,000 Trees for His Late Wife—15 Years Later, the Photos Revealed a Hidden Truth

Man Plants Secret Heart-Shaped Forest in Memory of His Late Wife

In a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Janet, Howard Howes turned his grief into a stunning symbol of devotion. After Janet died in 1995 at the age of 50, Howard — then 53 — planted thousands of oak saplings across his 112-acre farm in Wickwar, Gloucestershire. At the center of the planting, he preserved a meadow in the shape of a heart, carefully aligned to point toward Janet’s childhood home on Wotton Hill.

“I came up with the idea after Janet died. It was a flash of inspiration,” Howard, now 70, said. “I sometimes go there to sit and think. It’s a lasting tribute that will be here for years.”

For years, the meadow remained a secret, unseen from the ground. It was only discovered when hot air balloonist Andy Collett noticed it from above, describing it as “the most amazing sight I have ever seen from the sky.” Each spring, daffodils bloom inside the heart-shaped clearing, adding a soft burst of color to the already striking scene.

Howard and Janet married in 1962 and spent more than three decades together. Now, the hidden heart-shaped forest stands as a quiet, enduring reminder that even after loss, love can take root and grow into something meant to last.
