Tragic Loss: Beloved Legend’s Passing Leaves Fans Heartbroken

Rob Hirst, the founding drummer and rhythmic backbone of the iconic Australian rock band Midnight Oil, has passed away at the age of 70 following a prolonged struggle with pancreatic cancer.

The band announced Hirst’s death in a poignant social media post on Tuesday, Jan. 20, mourning the loss of one of Australia’s most significant rock musicians.

Midnight Oil, the Australian rock band, has sold over 20 million albums globally and gained international recognition with their 1987 hit album Diesel and Dust. Often celebrated as one of Australia’s most cherished bands, they played a crucial role in shaping a generation of politically charged rock music.

However, a crucial and irreplaceable member of the band is no longer with us. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2023, drummer Rob Hirst has now passed away. Midnight Oil shared this news on Instagram, accompanied by a photo of the band, conveying their sorrow and appreciation for the music they created together.

“We are heartbroken and mourning the loss of our brother Rob,” the band expressed.
“For now, words escape us, but there will always be music. With love, always from Jim, Martin & Pete.”

In a separate message shared on Facebook, the band disclosed that Hirst had been battling cancer for almost three years.

“After a courageous fight lasting nearly three years, Rob is now free from pain,” the message stated.

It went on: “A glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness.” He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Rob make a donation to Pankind, Pancreatic Cancer Australia, or Support Act.

A foundational figure in Australian rock

Hirst co-founded Midnight Oil in Sydney in 1972, playing a pivotal role in shaping a band that would become one of Australia’s most politically vocal and internationally acclaimed rock groups.

The band released its self-titled debut album in 1978 and later received 11 ARIA Awards. In 2006, Midnight Oil was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, solidifying its place in Australian music history.

In addition to his drumming, Hirst was a significant creative force, co-writing many of the band’s most memorable songs, such as “Beds Are Burning,” “The Dead Heart,” “Blue Sky Mine,” “Forgotten Years,” and “King of the Mountain.”

Final Years

Midnight Oil took a break in 2002 but came back together in 2016 to create new music. They released two more albums, with their last one, Resist, coming out in 2022.

That release was succeeded by a farewell tour that signified the conclusion of their long-standing journey. Hirst also pursued music independently, embarking on a solo career in 2005.

In 2020, Hirst unveiled a collaborative album with his daughter Jay O’Shea, whom he had only reconnected with a few years prior. At that time, O’Shea shared the deeply personal narrative behind the project on Instagram.

“For those who aren’t aware, I was adopted as an infant and a decade ago discovered my biological parents. The tale of how we all came together resembles poor fiction writing as it’s quite unbelievable,” she expressed.

“We truly created this music as a means of getting to know one another better, and after much laughter, enjoying some fine wines, and indulging in too much cheese, these songs came to life,” she continued.

Started counting his days

“There were no parameters, guidelines, or pressures regarding what a reunited Father/Daughter collaboration should sound like. Each song is a snapshot. Each song possesses its own space and narrative.”

Hirst’s final project, a solo EP titled A Hundred Years or More, was released last November.

“Now that I’ve begun counting back in life instead of forward, the days feel even more valuable,” Hirst remarked in one of his last interviews and added:

“I still awaken in the night with lyrics and melodies. Musical insomnia. If you’re a songwriter, whether blessed or cursed, it’s always present. Perhaps there are a few more songs. You never say never.”

Unfortunately, there would be no additional songs, as the cherished musician passed away in January 2026 at the age of 70. Following the announcement of his passing, his daughter O’Shea shared a brief yet heartfelt tribute to her father.

“There are no words at this moment to convey the feeling of losing this wonderful friend and Father. We are all just… heartbroken. Love you so much Dad, J💙,” she wrote.
