‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant Loses $50K After Failing to Solve Controversial Puzzle
A recent broadcast of Wheel of Fortune concluded in disappointment—not merely for the competitor on stage, but also for the viewers watching from their living rooms. Kyle MacDonald, an associate dean at Brown University, missed out on taking home the $50,000 jackpot during the Bonus Round. This defeat marked the eighth consecutive time a contestant missed the grand prize on the iconic game show.

The episode, which aired on May 8, showcased MacDonald facing off against Jeanette Cothron of Tuscola, Illinois, and Kiran Makhani from Portland, Oregon. During the main portion of the game, MacDonald put on an impressive showing. He accumulated a total of $27,950 in cash and rewards, which included getaways to Costa Rica and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. However, it was the ultimate puzzle that led to his downfall.
During the Bonus Round, MacDonald—who was accompanied by his husband, Andrew, in the audience—opted for “Person” as his puzzle category. After the board provided the default letters R, S, T, L, N, and E, he went with the letters D, M, P, and O. The board then revealed: “_ _ _OMPL_S_ED _ _ _ _TOR.”

With only a few seconds on the clock to crack the code, MacDonald offered the guess “Accomplished Author.” He nailed the first half but faltered on the second word. The actual solution was “Accomplished Aviator.” Missing that single word resulted in a massive $50,000 loss.
Now in his inaugural season, host Ryan Seacrest delivered the unfortunate news with a compassionate demeanor. The unsuccessful solve quickly triggered a flood of internet reactions.

“Another Bonus Round defeat? This is becoming a catastrophe,” remarked one irritated YouTube commenter. Another chimed in, saying, “This is agonizing to witness. How many more players will miss out on $50,000 before somebody ends this losing streak?”
Even with the tough defeat, MacDonald maintained a positive attitude. Once production concluded, he took to Instagram to reflect on his time on set, referring to it as “the fastest 22 minutes of my life.” He elaborated, “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I’m still in shock that it really took place.”
He additionally recounted how Wheel of Fortune was a significant element of his youth, remembering evenings spent viewing the program in Canada alongside his grandmother. “She would have been overjoyed to witness this,” he expressed, pointing out that the series assisted him in learning the alphabet and ignited a permanent passion for game shows.

The other players from the broadcast took home more modest winnings: Cothron secured $5,550, while Makhani collected $2,000. Nevertheless, it was MacDonald’s close call that captured everyone’s attention—and prompted viewers to once again debate the toughness of the Bonus Round.
With the Bonus Round losing streak continuing, audiences are left to ask: are the odds stacked slightly too high?
