‘Wheel of Fortune’ Player Falls Just Short of Winning $45K in Heartbreaking Bonus Round Loss

Audiences watching “Wheel of Fortune” from home were left groaning once more when another player came devastatingly close to a huge Bonus Round prize, only to see it vanish at the last second.

The iconic game show is presently broadcasting a special vacation wedge series, offering contestants the opportunity to win incredible international trips alongside cash. However, rather than celebrating massive victories, viewers feel the recent episodes are becoming a weekly dose of letdowns.

The most recent disappointment occurred during an episode featuring a contestant named Shibby. She had a stellar performance all evening until the high-stakes Bonus Round brought her winning streak to a grinding halt.

Right from the start, Shibby demonstrated she was there to win. She started off strong by accurately guessing the initial Toss-Up puzzle under the “Thing” category, solving “Inspirational Quote” to instantly boost her score by $1,000.

Shortly after, she maintained her hot streak by buzzing in for the second Toss-Up, themed “Happy Hour.” Her accurate answer of “Grilled Shrimp” secured her an additional $2,000, keeping her momentum strong.

This confidence carried over into the second round, featuring a crossword-style puzzle with the clue “Say Cheese.” Shibby successfully identified a variety of cheeses—Brie, Blue, Feta, and Provolone—bagging $4,400 and extending her lead over the competition.

Her most significant victory happened in the Prize Puzzle round.

Under the category “What Are You Doing?”, Shibby assuredly solved the phrase “Screaming At The Top Of My Lungs.” This won her a stunning Mediterranean coastal getaway. The luxurious Colette tour, valued at almost $14,000, includes stops in Spain, France, and Italy, prompting enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

And she wasn’t done playing.

In the “FYI” themed Triple Toss-Up round, where every right answer fetched $2,000, Shibby managed to solve two out of the three. By identifying “Most Valuable Player” and “Laughing Out Loud,” she tacked another $4,000 onto her swelling bankroll.

Concluding the main game, she was the clear leader with an impressive $28,098 in cash plus a European vacation—a fantastic performance by any measure.

However, as devoted fans know, the Bonus Round can alter someone’s fate in the blink of an eye.

Standing solo without any friends or family members present—which meant host Ryan Seacrest skipped his typical cheerful family introductions—Shibby opted for the “Food and Drink” category.

After being given the default letters of R, S, T, L, N, and E, she selected M, D, and K for her extra consonants, plus A as her vowel.

As the letters populated the board, a sense of uncertainty became apparent.

With time running out, Shibby struggled to find the right words, temporarily guessing words like “fried” before realizing it didn’t fit the board. The buzzer sounded before she could solve the puzzle.

The correct phrase was: “Cubed Honeydew.”

The disappointment was palpable when Seacrest unveiled the answer.

Failing to solve the puzzle meant Shibby missed out on a $45,000 cash reward—as well as an extra luxury trip to Finland hidden inside the prize envelope.

Even though she still went home with almost $30,000 and a magnificent Mediterranean vacation, online fans were far from happy.

Social media platforms were soon flooded with grievances, with many viewers claiming the puzzle was much too obscure and practically unsolvable unless the contestant picked the absolute perfect letters.

One viewer confessed they thought the first word was completely different, noting that the puzzle’s phrasing completely threw off their train of thought.

Another user bluntly commented: “$45,000 and Finland gone again — we need a winner already.”

Other critics accused the program of resorting to what they termed “budget puzzles,” asserting that the difficulty level in the Bonus Round has become unfairly steep.

As this streak of losses persists, dedicated “Wheel of Fortune” fans are keeping their fingers crossed that an upcoming spin will finally yield the massive victory they’ve been anticipating—before their frustration completely ruins the enjoyment of the game.
